Linux VPS - Enhanced Features
- Apache Web Server
- With this release, Apache Web server 2.x continues as a pre-installed core service included with your account. Web server
and Web Server Modules are provided by the Apache Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) Server (http://httpd.apache.org/). With
this release support for HTTP is enhanced to include Secure HTTP (HTTPS). Further, HTTP/HTTPS supports your optional usage of
multiple IP addresses per server account. With this release, the mod_php and mod_perl Apache HTTP modules are also pre-installed
on your account by default.

- FTP
- This release continues to support the following File Transfer Protocol (FTP) features:
FTP server (ProFTPd)
Anonymous FTP access
Unlimited FTP users
FTP server features are offered by continuing to support proFTPD (http://www.proftpd.org/) software. The software is maintained
by the ProFTPD Project under the terms of the Gnu Public License (GPL). With this release, support for FTP is enhanced to
include Secure FTP (S-FTP). Secure FTP is offered by introducing support for OpenSSH (http://www.openssh.com/) is developed
and maintained by the OpenBSD Project. The software is distributed under the terms of the OpenBSD license.
- IP Addresses
- With this release, your account continues to support a single, dedicated IP address (IPv4) as well as a host name. In
addition, however, this release supports a fee-based, optional Multiple IP address service (also IPv4). There is a maximum
number of optional IP addresses you can purchase based on the type of Linux VPS account:
Linux VPS Basic: Add four (4) additional IP addresses for a total of five (5).
Linux VPS Pro: Add nine (9) additional IP addresses for a total of ten (10).
Linux VPS Pro Plus: Add nineteen (19) additional IP addresses for a total twenty (20).
- Java
- For Linux VPS Pro Plus only, this release continues to provide default, pre-installed support for Java Platform, Standard
Edition (also known as Java 2 Platform). In particular, this release enhances support for the following technologies and packages:
J2SE Software Development Kit (SDK)
Java Servlet Technology
Java Server Pages (JSP) Technology
Tomcat Java Servlets
J2SE SDK is maintained by the Sun Developer Network (http://java.sun.com/javase/technologies/core/index.jsp) and is distributed
under the terms of Sun Microsystems, Inc. Your account utilizes Tomcat (http://tomcat.apache.org/) to provide Java Servlet
Technology and Java Server Pages Technologies. Tomcat is maintained by the Apache Software Foundation, developed under the
terms of the Java Community Process, and is distributed under the terms of the Apache Software Foundation.
This release enhances support for the Java 2 Platform by providing custom installation scripts (vinstall) and uninstallation
scripts (vuninstall).
Note: Many Java applications consume significant CPU and memory resources and may
not be appropriate for use on a VPS. For more, see "Linux VPS and Java Applications" on page 11.
- Mailing List Package
- This release enhances the following mailing list package features:
Majordomo (http://www.greatcircle.com/majordomo/).
FML (http://www.fml.org/).
Mailman (http://www.gnu.org/software/mailman/index.html).
These features now include custom installation scripts. The previous release supports the features but relies upon RPM for
installation and configuration tasks.
- Memory
- Memory limits are enhanced for this release, as follows:
Linux VPS Basic - 128 MB (512 MB burstable)
Linux VPS Pro - 256 MB (1GB burstable)
Linux VPS Pro Plus - 512 MB (1.5 burstable)
- MySQL
- MySQL (http://www.mysql.com/) continues to provide an open source database. This release also provides a set of custom
installation scripts for the database.
- Namazu
- With this release, Namazu (http://www.namazu.org/) continues to provide a full-text search engine.
- Open Webmail
- With this release, support for the Open Webmail system (http://openwebmail.org/) includes a custom installation utility.
- PHP
- With this release, PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor or PHP (http://www.php.net/) continues to provide a general-purpose scripting
language. This release provides a set of custom installation scripts you can use to install, configure, and uninstall the
language.
- Podcasting
- Support for storage, distribution, and exchange of multimedia files (podcasting) continues with this release. In addition,
podcasting is now included in the configuration options presented through the CPX: Control Panel.
- Procmail
- With this release you can use a custom installation script (vinstall) to install Procmail (http://www.procmail.org/). The
software provides mail processing and mailing list suites. This release does not include a custom script to automate the
removal of the suite from your account.
- SpamAssassin
- SpamAssassin (http://spamassassin.apache.org/) provides a mail filter which attempts to identify spam. The filter is
maintained by the Apache SpamAssassin Project and distributed under the terms of the Apache Software Foundation. With this
release, support for the filter is enhanced to include an installation script (vinstall) as well as an uninstall script
(vuninstall). SpamAssassin is an important additional feature of your account. It is not pre-installed by default.
- SSL
- This release continues to provide privacy and encryption by means of support for the Secure Sockets Layer or SSL protocol
(http://www.apache-ssl.org/). And with this release, SSL features are enhanced to include default multiple, private SSL
certificates and SSL email encryption.
- Vinstall Utility
- This release enhances support for custom installation scripts. Use the vinstall utility to add the following additional
programs and packages:

- With this release support for the WordPress (http://wordpress.org/) personal publishing platform is enhanced to include a
set of custom installation scripts. You can now use the scripts to more effectively install, configure, and/or uninstall the
platform.
