Virtual Subhosting

Virtual Subhosting is one of the most powerful features of the Virtual Private Server and our Apache Web Server. This feature allows you to support multiple domain names that each resolve to their own unique subdirectories on a single Virtual Private Server. In other words, you can host bob.com and jim.com on the same Virtual Private Server, each with its own domain name and unique site content. You can also offer each Virtual Subhost customer their own unique FTP login with access to their own subdirectory and e-mail addresses using their own domain name.

Subhosting Limitations

Virtual Subhosting has many advantages, but each subhost can create a load on your server. Because the traffic, content, and load generated by a Web site can vary significantly from one site to another, we can not give exact numbers of subhosts a single server can handle. You should be aware, however, that CGI scripts, dynamic content, and heavy traffic sites will need more of your VPS than simple static content sites.

Configuration

Configuring Virtual Subhosts need not be a daunting task. There are several methods you can use to do it. A utility that automates Virtual Subhost configuration can be easier, faster, and more user-friendly. If you require more flexibility to fine tune the setup to your exact needs, then you should configure your Virtual Subhosts by hand.
NOTE: Before configuring the Subhost on your Virtual Private Server you will first want to make sure the domain has been added to nameservers. Most Registrars have nameservers available to use. If you do not know what nameservers your domain has been added to contact the Registrar. It is also a good idea to have the TTL lowered for existing domains. The TTL is the amount of time that the current domain name informaion remains in Internet Server caches. This is done in the DNS registry of the domain. If you do not have access to the DNS registry contact the Registrar.
