Connecting to your Virtual Private Server

When you ordered your new Virtual Private Server, you were asked to provide a username and password for your administrative user account. This account is the one you will use to connect to your server to perform administrative tasks.

Your administrative user is the primary user for managing your Virtual Private Server, and has E-mail and FTP permissions, as well as the ability to manage virtual user accounts, managing FTP, Web, and Email configuration. In addition, the administrative user is a member of the wheel group, which means that the administrative user can use the su command to become the root user.

When connecting to your VPS2 to perform administrative tasks, you should always connect using a secure protocol (such as SSH, SFTP, or SCP). You should avoid connecting to your VPS2 directly as the root user, and should never use an insecure protocol when doing so. Direct connections using the root user are not allowed.

A successful login will place you in the User Home Directory. Only the User's files and directories are accessible here. To access the main server directories you will need to Change Up one directory to the Server Directory.

Telnet	We strongly discourage the use of Telnet service since passwords and all other information is transmitted insecurely. SSH is a secure alternative. Administrative User Any user with shell privileges
SFTP, SCP	Administrative User Any user with shell privileges Root User, if using SSH keys (disallowed if using passwords)
FTP	We strongly discourage the use of FTP service since passwords and all other information is transmitted insecurely. SFTP, SCP, and SSH tunneled FTP are secure alternatives. Administrative User Any user with FTP privileges
Email - POP, IMAP, SMTP	Administrative User Any user with POP, IMAP, and/or SMTP privileges
iManager, CPX	Administrative User Any user with shell, ftp, or email privileges
