Security

When processing and accepting orders from an E-commerce Website, security is of the highest importance. If visitors to the site do not feel comfortable they will not purchase goods and services from your Web site. By adding SSL (Secure Socket Layer) to the server you are able to provide a secure environment to handle transactions.
  1. Secured - When information is passed to and from the server it needs to encrypted to protect the parties sending an receiving from the Web site. Adding SSL (Secure Socket Layer) will give you 128byte encryption for all information passed from the server. There are three points at which it is important to have SSL or some other form of security performing e-commerce transactions:
    1. When the customer is entering payment information
    2. When the e-commerce program sends information to a Payment Gateway for authorization and capture of payment information
    3. When the merchant is viewing orders and payment information
  2. Non-Secured - not a real option if you are considering an E-commerce solution. The Web site needs to have a secure operation for sending and receiving information.

Authentication and Assurance

SSL Certificates give authentication to a Web site that is going to be selling goods and services. Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is used to ensure that information is processed in a secure environment. There are two different kinds of SSL Certificates that are available for the Virtual Private Server.
  1. Default SSL Certificate or Shared Certificate - provided with all AlpineWeb Hosting plans. This certificate is used when checking out to show that you are in a secure environment.
  2. Custom SSL Certificate - offered through third party vendors that provide your business with a "stamp of approval" for doing business on the Internet. There are a number of companies that offer this service.
    • GeoTrust
    • Equifax
    • Thawte/VeriSign
Using a certificate from a Signing Authority will still require the need to add SSL to the server for purposes of encryption.
